A Roundtable in Budapest to Commemorate Sir Roger Scruton
He was a dominant voice of contemporary philosophy – and a friend of Hungary.
Sir Roger Scruton (1944-2020) was an English philosopher, a dominant voice of contemporary analytical philosophy (aesthetics and political philosophy). But he was conservative, a rather rare philosophical standpoint in present day English language academia. Therefore he could not earn the proper recognition of his exceptional achievements.
But Central Europe appreciated the merits of Sir Roger. Poles, Czechs, Hungarians – all of them decorated their English friend, who did a lot already before the regime change for these nations’ liberty, in order to facilitate the recovery of their self-esteem.
This roundtable will consist of two parts. In the first part, we will discuss Scruton and his relationship to Central Europe, together with Mr. Zsolt Németh, president of the Committee of Foreign Affairs of the Hungarian Parliament, and Marek Matraszek, a Polish friend and disciple of Scruton.
In the second part, we shall talk with Attila Károly Molnár, head of the Thomas Molnár Institute and Zoltán Balázs, professor of Corvinus University, about Scruton’s relationship to culture.
Both discussions will be moderated by Ferenc Hörcher, head of the Research Institute of Politics and Government of the National University of Public Service.

Megemlékezés a kortárs filozófia meghatározó alakjáról.
Sir Roger Scruton (1944-2020) angol filozófus a kortárs analitikus filozófia (esztétika és politikai filozófia) meghatározó alakja volt. De konzervatív, ami a mai angolszász egyetemi világban meglehetősen ritka filozófiai álláspont. Ezért akadémiai pályafutásán nem kaphatta meg az őt megillető elismerést.
Közép-Európa azonban megbecsülte Scruton érdemeit. Mind a lengyelek, mind a csehek, mind pedig a magyarok kitüntették angol barátjukat, aki már a rendszerváltás előtt sokat tett e nemzetek szabadságáért, önbecsülésük visszanyerése érdekében.
A kerekasztal beszélgetés két részből fog állni: az első részében Scruton és Közép-Európa viszonyát fogjuk taglalni, Németh Zsolttal, az Országgyűlés Külügyi Bizottságának elnökével, aki Sir Roger régi barátja volt, valamint Marek Matraszekkel, Scruton lengyel barátjával és tanítványával.
A beszélgetés második részében Molnár Attila Károllyal, a Molnár Tamás Intézet vezetőjével és Balázs Zoltánnal, a Corvinus egyetem egyetemi tanárával beszélgetünk Scruton és a kultúra kapcsolatáról.
