Description

Catherine Horel examines the social, ethnic, and cultural diversity of the Habsburg Monarchy in its final decades by focusing on twelve small towns, thereby complementing existing studies of major cities. Her analysis highlights aspects of everyday life - such as associations, schools, the economy, and urban politics - while avoiding both the idealization of peaceful multiculturalism and the exaggeration of ethnic and other conflicts. Catherine Horel argues that these towns were dynamic spaces where modernization brought a mix of decay, mobility, development, and vibrant cultural life.
