Indigenous peoples' rights are protected in relatively few international legal instruments, including the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. Yet, rights on paper are sometimes hard to realize in practice, as is shown by the example of the Ogiek people. The Ogiek is an indigenous community with a population of 45 000, living in the Mau Forest, Kenya, having faced repeated evictions from their ancestral land. Daniel Kobei, Executive Director of the Ogiek Peoples’ Development Program, will share us his first-hand experience of how this tenacious people has struggled in defense of their identity, land rights and traditional livelihood.
