We can say that the question of loyalty to national state rises in the context of presence of different heritage, ethnic and religious collective identities in it. If we examine how states were formed in 19th century Balkans, we can see why former multinational state, Yugoslavia failed to gain loyalty of large minorities. The end of the regional communist ideology brought back into surface importance of previous collective identities based on religion and ethnicity. Our task is to examine how those collective identities relate to European identity.
